AR137 Advanced Simulation-Based Education for Clinical Educators — Virtual Delivery

Course summary

This advanced virtual 2 day programme is designed for clinicians and educators who already have a foundation in simulation-based education (SBE) and wish to develop their skills further. Delivered online via Zoom, the course provides opportunities for reflection and practice between sessions, and focuses on complex scenario design, advanced facilitation, high-level debriefing, psychological safety, governance, and quality assurance across primary care and multiprofessional settings.

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for educators and healthcare professionals supporting learners in primary care, community, urgent care, higher education, or simulation centres. Suitable participants include:

  • Advanced Practitioners (ANPs/ACPs)
  • Physician Associates
  • Practice Nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • GP Supervisors & Educators
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Simulation Technicians / Coordinators

An introductory SBE course such as the PDUK AR136- An Introduction to Practical Simulation Training for Primary Care Clinicians and Educators course is recommended before attending.

Important notes

What You Will Gain

Participants will develop advanced capability in:
• Designing complex, branching simulation scenarios
• Embedding human factors, systems thinking & diagnostic uncertainty
• Facilitating psychologically safe, learner-centred simulations
• Using advanced debriefing models (PEARLS, Diamond, Advocacy–Inquiry)
• Managing challenging learner behaviours and group dynamics
• Integrating SPs, digital tools, and hybrid simulation
• Conducting assessment, validation, and quality assurance
• Leading simulation within organisations and across multiprofessional teams

Participants will leave with practical frameworks, templates, and a fully developed advanced scenario with debrief plan.

Course programme

Day 1 – Advanced Design & Facilitation:
• Psychological safety & advanced pre-briefing
• Transformative Simulation & Cognitive Load Theory at an advanced level
• Complex scenario design with branching decision points
• Human factors and systems thinking
• Working with simulated patients
• Advanced facilitation skills and peer coaching

Day 2 – Debriefing, Assessment & Quality Assurance:
• Mastering debriefing techniques
• Managing difficult debrief situations
• Simulation as assessment: fairness, bias & validity
• Evaluation, quality assurance & scenario validation
• Leading a simulation service
• Capstone project presentation

Participants complete a short reflective or design activity between the two days.
