It is ideal for nurses who have attended a two day foundation programme and need to meet yearly update requirements. The course is in line with the recommendations of the current Public Health England (formerly Health Protection Agency) Standards for Immunisation Training.

Aims / objectives

  • Be more confident in providing accurate and current information on childhood diseases and immunisation to parents/patients.
  • Be aware of the current JCVI and Department of Health's recommendations on immunisations and ensure implementation of such at local level
  • Be aware of any current issues and changes to the immunisation schedule .
  • Continue to carry out safe, effective childhood immunisation care to a high standard.

  • Review of national policy on immunisation and schedules
  • Review of COVER and local update as necessary
  • Review of examples of vaccine preventable diseases and changes to the schedule
  • Communication issues with patients and parents
  • Review of PGDs and PSDs
  • Clinical issues re storage and handling of vaccines and administration
  • Review of anaphylaxis and adverse events
  • Documentation, record keeping and reporting
  • Strategies for improving uptake rates
