Aims / objectives

  • Review basic anatomy and physiology of the heart, applying this to ECG recording and interpretation.
  • Review the normal ECG rhythm.
  • Understand and review common rhythm strip abnormalities.
  • Consider the role of the 12-lead ECG in clinical practice.
  • Understand the cardiac axis and its role in interpreting the 12-lead ECG
  • Systematically interpret 12 lead ECGs
  • Identify normal ECG patterns.
  • Recognise ECG abnormalities such as atrial, junctional and ventricular arrhythmias and heart blocks.
  • Identify patterns of myocardial ischaemia and infarction.

  • A&P of the heart and coronary circulation related to ECG interpretation.
  • The cardiac conduction system.
  • The normal ECG and rhythm strip abnormalities.
  • How to record a 12 Lead ECG.
  • Troubleshooting
  • 12-lead ECG interpretation- normal 12 lead and cardiac axis
  • ECG interpretation- abnormal patterns. To include:
  • -Atrial abnormalities
  • -Ventricular abnormalities
  • -Conduction disorders and the heart blocks
  • -Ischaemia and infarction
  • -Rhythm recognition
