Aims / objectives

  • Discuss the basic principles of pharmacology and apply them to a variety of commonly used drugs.
  • Explore factors that affect how medications work.
  • Review drug usage for a number of common conditions.
  • Be aware of possible drug reactions, contraindications and other unwanted effects.

Course programme

Basic principles for the safe use and supply of medicines including:

  • Factors affecting how medicines work - age, race, other medicines, co-morbidities
  • Adverse drug reactions - how they occur, what to do about them
  • Using patient group directions and other mechanisms of supply
  • Finding out about medicines - knowing what you don't know

Drugs and their uses including:

  • Actions and uses
  • Cautions and contraindications
  • Unwanted effects

Medicines for gastrointestinal disease:

  • Dyspepsia
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation

Medicines for infections:

  • Common infections - including sore throat, acute bronchitis, skin infections, conjunctivitis, coughs and colds, cold sores
  • Understanding bacterial resistance and how to tackle it

Analgesics:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Headache
  • Fever

Medicines for allergies/skin conditions:

  • Hayfever
  • Skin allergies
  • Dry skin
