Aims / objectives

  • Apply the principles of structured history taking and physical examination when
  • conducting an assessment of the patient with an eye complaint.
  • Recognise when a patient's condition is of an emergent or sight threatening
  • nature; managing accordingly.
  • Practice eye examination techniques on a colleague.
  • Discuss diagnosis and management of common ophthalmologic conditions seen
  • in primary care.

Course programme

  • Anatomy of the eye
  • Ophthalmic history taking including red flags
  • Ophthalmologic examination including vision testing, external ocular assessment and honing your fundoscopy skills.
  • Fluorescine staining, eyelid eversion, foreign body removal.
  • Spotting emergent and sight threatening eye conditions
  • Identification and management of common presentations including red eye and painful eye
