Course summary

This comprehensive 2 day workshop looks at both the theoretical and practical aspects of venepuncture, cannulation and IV drug adminstration. It is aimed at meeting the needs of nurses from community or acute settings who are new or who would like to refresh their knowledge and skills in these areas. By the end of the course participants will feel able to safely work towards competence in their own workplace.

Day 2- IV Therapy

  • Methods for delivering IV therapy (continuous, intermittent, bolus injection)
  • Central venous access devices
  • Preparation of IV therapy
  • Drug calculations
  • Drug compatibility and instability
  • Administration of IV therapy including pump devices
  • Nursing responsibilities for the IV site and maintaining line patency
  • Potential complications and problems associated with IV drug administration.
  • Implications for IV therapy delivery in the community/acute setting.
