Course summary
Community pharmacists now have the opportunity to provide immunisations for their customers. This course teaches the essential theory and injection skills that allow local pharmacists to deliver influenza and pneumococcal vaccines on their premises.

1. Have attended previous infection control training
2. Are a non-medical prescriber or able to work to a PGD
3. Have a clinical mentor who is competent in immunisation and is able to undertake competency assessment

Aims / objectives
- Be aware of the background and context of the influenza and pneumococcal immunisation programmes.
- Review how immunity works and the different types of vaccines.
- Understanding the legal, professional and clinical governance framework.
- Discuss safe storage, handling and administration of the vaccines.
- Be aware of patient identification and the pre-admission health screening process.
- Review accurate recording and patient information systems.
- Be able to recognise and manage a patient with anaphylaxis.

- Influenza and pneumococcal immunisation history and epidemiology
- Aims of the national immunisation policy
- The chief medical officer's influenza letter
- Refresher on the immune system and how vaccines work
- Anaphylaxis refresher
- Indications, composition and contraindications for pneumococcal/influenza including child dosages
- Effective vaccination communication
- Legal aspects of administering prescription-only medication
- Consent, accountability and indemnity refresher
- Documentation and record keeping
- Competency assessment in the work place
- Vaccine administration theory including health and safety and infection control
- Practical injection training workshop with hands-on practice
