This interactive course will help you carry out telephone triage confidently and knowledgeably. It will show you how to develop a structured and effective manner and how to be safer and more competent over the telephone

  • Gain an insight into the need for telephone triage.
  • Explore the legal issues of telephone triage.
  • Understand the use and application of independent prescribing with telephone triage.
  • Review the general principles in managing a triage call and how to create a good rapport with the caller.
  • View standard triage protocols and develop a protocol relevant to your working area.
  • Work through triage situations covering the main body systems, including both minor and major ailments.
  • Discuss support systems required for telephone triage in individual areas.

  • Legal implications, including documentation and use of protocols.
  • Independent prescribing and telephone triage.
  • Managing a triage call, including establishing a helpful relationship and active listening.
  • Standard triage protocols; develop a protocol for your own working environment.
  • Minor and major ailments in triage situations and case scenario practice, including patients with long-term conditions.
  • Support systems; a discussion of what is needed in individual areas.
